Like Jeanne, Suzanne, or other characters in the drama written by Danielle Trottier, inmates are often held back by the very heavy baggage from their past as well as being handicapped by a tremendous lack of self-esteem.
Chaplains, program officers, teachers, volunteers...stakeholders, called to play decisive roles in helping troubled women reclaim their lives, begin by establishing a bond of trust, then using their own life experience to caution them on what to look out for, and giving them their undivided attention, which may very well be the first step towards getting their self-esteem back.
Chaplains Danièle Chabot and Guy Gravel, program officers Lauraine Dufour (a survivor of abuse), Chantale St-Amour (mother-child), and Line Rainville (aboriginal programs), volunteer Nicole Bourgeois (whose activity helps build relationships between mothers, grandmothers, and aunts with children), teacher Raymond Lavoie and guidance counselor Valérie Vaillancourt, plus many inmates and ex-cons talk about how the heavy commitment these special relationships demand eventually leads them to seeing the light.
