Guacamelee features down-on-his-luck Juan Aguacate who sets out to save the world when El Presidente’s daughter is kidnapped by an evil Charro Skeleton. The story takes place in and around a small village in Mexico, and has the player travelling through alternate dimensions including “The World of the Dead” and “The World of Nightmares” on his quest to rescue the girl he loves.
While the downloadable video game for home consoles draws its inspiration from traditional Mexican culture and folklore – and features many interesting and unique characters – it also boasts next-generation Super Mario Bros-style play, complete with dimension-switching ability that opens new puzzles, combat mechanics and world levels. The target market (males 13 and up) gets new control and touch interfaces, and can also enhance the gaming experience through social media channels.
Built on the classic open-world, Metroid-vania style of games, Guacamelee adds a strong free-for-all combat component, new dimension-switching mechanics, and a co-operative same-screen multiplayer element for the entire story. The boundaries between combat and platforming are relaxed by making many moves useful in both contexts.
Guacamelee is one of the 2 titles from DrinkBox to be selected by IGF after they had received a record-breaking number of entries (570).
