When Xia Qi, Wu Yang and Lu Dandan return to Beijing, they find that circumstances have changed considerably. The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) is preparing to conduct inspections of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) and the Central Propaganda Department. Mr. Jiang, head of Big Shorts TV, figures that he’ll need one of his cronies to hold a key position at SARFT in order to learn about the CCDI inspection team’s progress and prevent any sensitive information about his own misdeeds from being uncovered. Jiang decides to transfer Dandan to SARFT, creating a vacancy at Big Shorts for associate political news editor and producer of In Focus. The self-absorbed Wu Yang is confident he’s the man for the job, while Dandan recommends Xia Qi to fill the vacancy. Jiang isn’t especially pleased with either of them, and wants to see how each performs before making a decision. At this time, Big Shorts TV receives notice that Party chief Xi Dada is planning to visit and inspect the station. Politburo Standing Committee member Liu Yun, who is in charge of propaganda, tells Jiang that Big Shorts TV must demonstrate a strong “Party spirit”, no matter how absurd it seems in doing so. Wu Yang’s father suggests adopting the slogan “The Party’s media bears the surname of the Party; Please Inspect Us” and use the opportunity to demonstrate loyalty to the Party’s leadership. Wu Yang earns praise after sharing this idea with Jiang, who decides to proceed with it.
